Zion Women's Wild and Free Retreat
Zion National Park · La Verkin, Utah · June 3–7, 2027
"Somewhere beneath red canyon walls that have stood for millions of years, in the silence between wind gusts in a slot canyon, at the trailhead just before you take that first step — something shifts. The everyday noise falls away. What rises in its place is exactly who you are when no one needs anything from you. This is that place. This retreat was built for you."
About This Retreat
There are landscapes on this earth that do not simply impress — they recalibrate. Zion National Park is one of them. Rising from the high desert of southwestern Utah, Zion's canyon walls of Navajo Sandstone tower nearly 2,000 feet above the canyon floor — blush-red, rust-orange, cream, and sienna — painted in layers that read like a geologic love letter written across 270 million years. The Virgin River carved this place, and it is still carving it, winding through the canyon floor in cold jade-green water that catches the slant of morning light and throws it back against the walls in ribbons of gold. Slot canyons narrow to a sliver of sky overhead. Cottonwoods turn amber along the river. Condors trace lazy arcs high above the canyon rim. Zion is not a backdrop. It is a presence.
This retreat was designed for women who have been running too fast, too long — women who know the value of an adventure and are ready to claim one. It is for the woman who has been quietly telling herself she will do something like this someday, and for the woman who has already been on trails all her life and simply wants to be in beautiful country with other women who get it. You do not need to be an elite athlete. You do not need to have hiked in years. You need only the willingness to show up, lace your boots, and take the first step. The canyon will do the rest.
Over four days, our small group will move through Zion's most celebrated terrain together. We will wade the Virgin River up through The Narrows — one of the most iconic slot canyon experiences in the world, where the walls press close on either side and the sky becomes a narrow ribbon far above. We will hike to viewpoints that stop the breath. We will sit at trailheads in the early morning cool with coffee and not say anything for a while, because nothing needs to be said. We will share dinners at the end of long days with tired legs and full hearts, and the conversation will be the best kind — honest, easy, layered with the particular richness that comes from having done something hard together. Every trail here earns its views.
What you will bring home from Zion is not a souvenir. It is something quieter and more durable — the knowledge of what your body can do in demanding terrain, the particular confidence that comes from not quitting, the memory of a canyon so extraordinary that it silenced the part of your mind that is always making noise. This retreat was built around the belief that women do their best growing, connecting, and becoming when they are placed in wild and beautiful spaces together. Zion is that space. These are those women.
The Spirit of This Place
"The canyon does not care what you accomplish at home or what you are worried about on Monday. It only asks that you walk into it and pay attention. You will find, somewhere between the first bend and the last, that paying attention to something this magnificent is its own profound act of renewal. These women — your trail partners, your dinner companions, your cheering section up every switchback — they are the reason you will carry this trip for years."

Travel Logistics
Getting to La Verkin, Utah
La Verkin, Utah is the gateway town to Zion National Park — a small, remarkably charming canyon community nestled right at the park's south entrance, with excellent restaurants, local outfitters, and lodging options within easy reach of the park gates. There is no commercial airport in La Verkin itself; participants fly into one of several regional or major airports and drive or arrange a shuttle into town. The drive into our lodge is stunning in every direction — red rock mesas, the Virgin River Gorge, and the canyon walls rising at the road's end like a curtain going up on the main act.
Airport Options
Airport Code Distance Drive Time Airlines / Notes
St. George Regional Airport SGU ~47 miles 1 hour Delta, American, United — connections through SLC, DEN, PHX, DFW. Closest airport; limited schedule but shortest drive. Book early — rental cars sell out quickly.
Harry Reid International (Las Vegas) LAS ~165 miles 2.5–3 hours All major carriers — Southwest, Delta, American, United, Spirit, Frontier. Best flight selection and fares. Most participants fly into Las Vegas.
Cedar City Regional Airport CDC ~60 miles 1 hr 15 min Delta Connection (via SLC). Small and quiet. Good backup option if SGU is sold out.
Salt Lake City International SLC ~310 miles 4.5–5 hours All major carriers. Best for multi-park trips or combining with other Utah destinations.
Driving Notes
● From Las Vegas (LAS): Take I-15 North through the spectacular Virgin River Gorge into Utah, exit at Hurricane on UT-9, then east through Hurricane and La Verkin. Build in 15–20 minutes extra for the time zone change — Pacific to Mountain — at the Arizona/Utah state line.
● From St. George (SGU): Head north briefly on I-15, then east on UT-9 through Hurricane directly into La Verkin. A straightforward, beautiful 1-hour drive.
● Parking note: Do not plan to drive into the park during shuttle season (March–November) — private vehicles are not permitted on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive.
Rental Car Guidance
Rental cars are available at all four airports. SGU and CDC rental inventories are small — book 2–3 months in advance, especially for peak season travel (spring and fall). LAS has the largest inventory and most competitive pricing. If multiple participants are flying into the same airport, sharing a rental car is highly recommended and significantly reduces cost. Coordinate via the group chat after registration.
Shuttle Options (Airport to La Verkin)
Shared shuttle services operate seasonally between Las Vegas and La Verkin — search for "St. George Express shuttle" and similar regional providers for current schedules and pricing. Zion Shuttle Services and comparable companies also operate seasonal shared shuttles from both Las Vegas and St. George. Contact your guide after registration for current recommended providers.
Getting Around
Getting Around Once You're There
Zion operates one of the most visitor-friendly shuttle systems of any national park in the United States. Once you are in La Verkin, a car becomes unnecessary — and, during shuttle season, unwelcome inside the canyon. Here is how it all works.
Free La Verkin Town Shuttle
● Runs through the town of La Verkin with stops at lodging areas and the park south entrance
● Connects directly to the NPS Zion Canyon Shuttle inside the park
● Operating season aligns with the main NPS shuttle season — spring through fall (typically March–November)
● Free of charge; no reservations required
Free NPS Zion Canyon Shuttle
● Runs 9 stops along the 7.7-mile Zion Canyon Scenic Drive — the heart of the park
● Key stops include: Zion Canyon Visitor Center · Court of the Patriarchs · Zion Lodge · Weeping Rock · Big Bend · Temple of Sinawava (Narrows trailhead)
● Private vehicles are NOT permitted on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive during shuttle season (March–November)
● No ticket, permit, or reservation needed to ride — park entry fee covers shuttle access
● 2025–2026 Schedule reference: First bus approximately 6:00–7:00 AM (seasonal); last bus approximately 8:15 PM at peak summer. Check nps.gov/zion for the most current schedule before your trip.
What G.O. Outdoor Adventures Coordinates
● Group morning meeting point at the La Verkin Town Shuttle stop each day — your guide will confirm exact location during Day 1 orientation
● All daily trailhead logistics using the shuttle system — no guesswork, no figuring it out alone
● No personal vehicle needed for any retreat activity inside the park
● We will have a van for any additional group travel needed.
Shuttle Tip
Arrive early at the shuttle stops — Zion is one of the most visited national parks in the United States, and summer and fall mornings move fast. Your guide will build early starts into the daily schedule to beat the crowds and the canyon heat. The canyon at 7:00 AM belongs to a different, quieter world entirely.
Daily Schedule
Your Four Days in Zion
Every day of this retreat is designed with intention — early starts to capture the canyon at its most magical, structured trail time with your guide, genuine rest built into the afternoon, and evenings that feel earned. Below is your day-by-day blueprint.

DAY 2 · FRIDAY, JUNE 4
The Narrows: Into the Slot Canyon
This is the signature day of the retreat — the day that will live in your memory long after you return home. The Virgin River carved this canyon. Today, you walk through it. Wake early. The coffee ritual begins.
Time Activity

7:00 AM Shuttle to Temple of Sinawava — the final stop on Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, the gateway to The Narrows.
7:30 AM – 12:00 PM The Narrows Hike — wading up the Virgin River through the most iconic slot canyon in North America. Towering walls press close on either side. Cold water. Shafts of light. Occasional deep pools. The trail leads the group at a pace that allows everyone to look up, look around, and be genuinely present in one of the most extraordinary places on earth. Distance and depth depend on group pace and river conditions. Narrows wading gear on the whole way. ~ 10 miles
12:30 PM Return shuttle to La Verkin. Gear drop at lodging. Rest. Hot showers. Let the body recover.
3:00 PM Optional: Canyon Overlook Trail — 1 mile round trip, moderate, spectacular canyon views from above. A completely different perspective on the same park. Remarkable in its own right.
6:00 PM Group Dinner — share the stories. The laughter at The Narrows is always the best part of dinner.
DAY 3 · SATURDAY, JUNE 5
UTV Riding & Canyoneering Tour
Morning coffee ritual. The canyon is waiting.
Time Activity
6:00–6:45 AM Morning Coffee Ritual at lodging. Activity briefing as a group.
7:00 AM Shuttle to Grotto Trailhead
7:15 AM – 12:00 PM UTV Excursion + Guided Canyoneering Tour — the adventure escalates. The morning begins with a guided UTV ride through the dramatic canyon terrain surrounding Zion — open-air, high-clearance, and deeply satisfying. Red rock formations, sweeping desert views, and terrain that simply cannot be reached on foot. From there, the group transitions into a guided canyoneering experience: rappelling, downclimbing, and moving through technical canyon terrain with a certified guide. Full instruction provided — no prior canyoneering experience required. All technical gear (harnesses, helmets, rappel devices) provided by the tour operator. G.O. Outdoor Adventures coordinates all reservations and logistics for this activity — details and liability waiver sent after registration.
12:30 PM Return shuttle to La Verkin. Lunch on your own in town — explore La Verkin's excellent cafés and outfitter shops.
3:00 PM Optional: Weeping Rock Trail — 0.5 miles, easy, hanging gardens of ferns and wildflowers fed by water seeping through the canyon walls. Brief and beautiful.
6:30 PM Group Dinner — celebration of the day's climbs and choices, every path worthy of its own story.
DAY 4 · SUNDAY, JUNE 6
Your Day, Your Adventure
Day 4 is yours. After three days of shared adventure, today is a chance to follow your own curiosity — push further, slow down, explore, or simply breathe. La Verkin and the greater Zion region offer a remarkable range of experiences. Your organizer can help with recommendations and reservations; many options require advance booking so let Kaitlin know your interest at registration.
● HORSEBACK RIDING — Guided trail rides through the canyon country surrounding Zion. Various operators in the area offer rides ranging from 1-hour scenic trips to half-day adventures through red rock terrain. A uniquely different perspective on this landscape.
● SKYDIVING — For those who didn't get enough adrenaline in the canyon, tandem skydiving is available in the St. George area (approximately 45–60 minutes from La Verkin). Views of Zion, Bryce, and the Utah desert from altitude are unmatched. Advance booking required — ask Kaitlin for operator recommendations.
● MORE HIKING — Zion has no shortage of trails. Use Day 4 to tackle anything left on your list :Angels landing (permit requires, this is your responsibility to arrange and book) East Mesa Trail, the Watchman Trail, Canyon Overlook, or the Kolob Canyons section of the park (approximately 45 minutes north — a completely different and equally stunning face of Zion).
● SHOPPING & EXPLORING — La Verkin and the surrounding towns have local art galleries, outfitter shops, gem and crystal stores, pottery, and Utah-made goods. Take the morning slow, browse at your own pace, and find something to bring home.
● OTHER LOCAL EXPERIENCES — Hot springs at Pah Tempe, scenic drives along Highway 9 through the Zion–Mt. Carmel Tunnel, visiting nearby Grafton Ghost Town, or simply sitting at the Virgin River with a book. Today belongs to you.
Evening of Day 4: Final group dinner together — a proper send-off celebration before Monday departures. Location TBD; your guide will coordinate.
DAY 5 · MONDAY, JUNE 7
Departure Day: One Last Morning
The last morning is slower. Savored. Five days in the canyon changes something in you — let the drive home be part of the integration.
Time Activity
7:00–7:30 AM Final Morning Coffee Ritual — slower than usual. Let it be slow.
7:30 AM Final Trail Walk — Lower Emerald Pools Loop or Pa'rus Trail. Gentle. Reflective. A last chance to listen to the canyon before you return it to itself.
10:00 AM Return to lodging. Pack out. Check-out procedures.
11:00 AM Closing Circle — brief group reflection, gratitude, and celebration of everything you did and everything you felt across these five extraordinary days.
11:30 AM onward Independent departures. Safe travels home. Come back to Zion — it keeps calling people back.
Departure Planning
Plan return flights for late afternoon or evening on Day 5 — a 1–1.5 hour drive to SGU or a 2.5–3 hour drive to LAS means departing La Verkin by 1:00 PM at the latest for a 4:00 PM SGU flight, or by noon for a 4:00 PM LAS flight. Do not book early-morning Day 5 departures — you will miss the closing circle and regret leaving the canyon before it has finished with you.
Safety
Safety & Canyon Conditions
Zion National Park is one of the most magnificently managed wild places in the country — and it is also a serious desert and canyon environment that demands genuine respect and preparation. Your guide is trained, experienced, and ready for contingencies. Your job is to come informed, honest about your body, and prepared to follow guide decisions without argument when conditions call for it.
Flash Flood Awareness
Most Critical Hazard
Flash floods are the most serious hazard in Zion, and they are particularly dangerous in slot canyons, including The Narrows. Floods can arrive with no warning even when the sky above you is clear — storms miles away in the watershed can send walls of water rushing through canyons at terrifying speed.
• The park monitors NPS flash flood advisories every morning — no Narrows entry will occur on high-risk days, no exceptions
• The NPS issues daily Narrows advisories; your group will check conditions before every hike
• Participants must never enter The Narrows against NPS guidance or guide instruction
• If The Narrows is closed, spectacular alternative plans are ready — see the FAQ
Heat & Sun
● Southern Utah desert temperatures can exceed 100°F in summer months; all retreat days are planned with early morning starts to minimize midday heat exposure on exposed trails
● Hydration is not optional — guide-recommended minimum is 1 liter of water per hour of hiking in warm conditions
● Sunscreen (SPF 50), a wide-brim sun hat, and light UPF-rated clothing are non-negotiable items; see the Packing List
Altitude Note
● La Verkin sits at approximately 3,900 feet elevation; Zion's canyon rim reaches 6,500–8,700 feet
● Most participants from lower elevations will feel completely comfortable — but some may notice mild altitude effects on arrival: slight headache, fatigue, or shortness of breath
● Rest and hydrate well on Day 1. The body adjusts quickly. Do not push hard on arrival day.
Wildlife
● Zion is home to mule deer, California condors, ringtail cats, rattlesnakes, and scorpions
● Stay on marked trails at all times. Do not approach, feed, or attempt to touch any wildlife.
● Shake out shoes and clothing left outdoors — scorpions are real and occasionally curious
● Guide carries a group first aid kit and Garmin inReach satellite communicator at all times
Trail Conditions & Difficulty
● Angels Landing: Requires significant aerobic fitness and is firmly not recommended for participants with a significant fear of heights or vertigo — the final 0.5-mile chain-assisted section traverses a narrow ridge with significant exposure on both sides. 1,488 feet of elevation gain total.
● The Narrows: Involves wading in cold water — 50–60°F year-round — that ranges from ankle-deep to waist-deep depending on river flow and conditions. Footing on river rock requires focus and balance.
● Participants are always and actively encouraged to honestly assess their own fitness and comfort level. There is never pressure to complete any specific trail. The guide will always offer a meaningful alternative. This retreat has no room for ego — only for honesty and good decision-making.
Communication & Emergency
● Cell service is limited to nonexistent inside Zion Canyon — plan accordingly and do not rely on your phone for navigation or emergency contact
● Zion National Park Emergency Line: 435-772-3322
● Submit your emergency contact information to your organizer before arrival day — a form will be sent with your registration confirmation
Packing
What to Pack
All personal clothing, footwear, and hiking gear is the participant's responsibility. G.O. Outdoor Adventures coordinates Narrows wading gear rentals — canyoneering shoes, neoprene socks, dry bag, and trekking poles — through outfitters in La Verkin. Reservation details and a direct booking link will be sent after registration. Do not purchase your own wading shoes separately unless pre-approved by your guide.
CLOTHING — HIKING
● Moisture-wicking hiking shirts — synthetic or merino wool (2–3 shirts)
● Lightweight hiking pants or shorts (2 pairs)
● Fleece or light insulating layer — canyon temperatures can run 15–20°F cooler than La Verkin town, especially in morning slot canyons
● Lightweight packable rain jacket — required. Afternoon monsoon storms are possible July through September.
● Sports bras and moisture-wicking underwear (3–4 sets)
● Warm layer for evenings — fleece or a light down jacket

Shared Standards
Our Agreement with Each Other
A small-group wilderness retreat works because every participant commits to a shared standard of care — for the environment, for each other, and for themselves. These expectations are not rules so much as they are the values that make this experience what it is. Read them as a mutual promise.
Show Up
Be at every shuttle stop and group meetup on time. Your group is waiting for you, and the shuttle does not hold. Early starts are what give us the canyon before the crowds arrive — protect them.
Take Care of Yourself
This retreat requires participants to be physically prepared to hike up to 10 miles per day on uneven, rocky terrain — please arrive trail-ready. That said, communicate openly and early with your guide about how you are feeling on the ground — feet, knees, energy, altitude, anything. No one is expected to push through pain or genuine distress. There is never shame in modifying a trail or choosing to rest. The guide is here to support every version of the experience, including the version where you sit at the trailhead with a coffee and watch the canyon walls turn color in the morning light.
Take Care of Each Other
This is a group experience. Cheer each other up climbs. Share the trail snacks. Listen to the stories at dinner. Be the kind of woman on this trip that you hope to be surrounded by. These four days will give you things to talk about for years — and the women you share them with may become people you keep.
Leave No Trace
No exceptions. Zion National Park receives millions of visitors per year. Pack out everything you pack in. Stay on marked trails at all times. Do not pick plants, disturb wildlife, or move rocks. Your guide will conduct a full Leave No Trace orientation on Day 1. Zion's survival as a wild, intact place depends on all of us doing this right, every time.
Respect the Shuttle System
During shuttle season (March–November), Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles. Use the shuttle. Do not attempt to drive into the canyon. The shuttle is fast, free, and part of the experience — use it and enjoy it.
Follow Guide Guidance on Conditions
If your guide determines that conditions are not safe for a planned activity — particularly The Narrows on a flash flood advisory day — that decision is final and non-negotiable. Safety always leads. Alternate plans will be offered that are worthy of your day. Trust the guide.
Be Device-Intentional
You are here to be present. Phones are tools — not companions on this trip. Take your photos, document your journey, share the canyon with the people you love at home. And also: put the phone away. Let the canyon be the canyon. You will be glad you did.
Frequently Asked Questions
FAQ
Do I need to be an experienced hiker to join this retreat?
Prior technical skills or canyon experience are not required, but a solid baseline of hiking fitness is. Participants should be comfortable hiking up to 10 miles per day on uneven terrain before arriving. The Narrows bottom-up — wading from the south entrance — requires no technical skills beyond the ability to walk in moving water on river rock for an extended period. Angels Landing is the only summit hike, and it is fully optional with a spectacular alternative (Scout Lookout) for those who prefer not to tackle the chains. If you are currently building toward that fitness level and have questions, reach out to Kaitlin directly.
What is the Angels Landing permit situation?
Angels Landing requires a permit obtained via a lottery system administered by the NPS through recreation.gov. G.O. Outdoor Adventures does not supply or apply for any permit on your behalf. If you want to hike angels landing on our free day, Sunday, you must secure your permit. Scout Lookout viewpoint — reached on the same trail, without the chains — requires no permit and is stunning in its own right. No one goes home disappointed.
What happens if The Narrows is closed due to flash flood risk?
Flash flood advisories occasionally close The Narrows — this is a real possibility and one your guide actively monitors every morning. If a closure occurs, your guide will pivot to equally spectacular alternatives: Upper Emerald Pools, Canyon Overlook, East Mesa Trail, the Zion-Mt. Carmel Scenic Drive, or a combination. Zion has no shortage of extraordinary backup plans. The canyon always delivers, one way or another.
What is the weather typically like in Zion?
It depends on the time of year, and retreat dates will be selected with ideal conditions in mind. Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are widely considered the finest seasons — mild temperatures in the 60–80°F range, manageable crowds by comparison, stunning light. Summer (June–August) brings extreme midday heat (90–110°F on the canyon floor), but early morning hiking is glorious and the light is extraordinary. Monsoon season (July–September) brings dramatic afternoon thunderstorms that clear quickly and light the canyon walls in ways that take the breath clean away.
Is the retreat physically demanding?
Yes. Participants must be physically prepared to hike up to 10 miles per day on uneven, rocky terrain. Daily mileage will typically fall in the 6–10 mile range depending on trail selection. The Narrows involves wading in cold, moving water on slippery river rock for several hours. Angels Landing adds 1,488 feet of elevation gain. While alternatives exist on every day, the retreat is designed for women who arrive trail-ready — please prepare accordingly in the months leading up to the trip. If you have questions about whether your current fitness level is a good fit, reach out to Kaitlin before registering.
What are the lodging arrangements?
Participants share lodging in La Verkin — every guest has an individual bed in shared room arrangements. Exact lodging details, rooming pairings, and any single-room upgrade options will be confirmed at registration. Flexibility will crucial on a group trip like this.
What is the cancellation policy?
Full cancellation and refund details will be outlined in your registration confirmation agreement. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all participants.
Can I arrive a day early or stay a day after the retreat?
Absolutely encouraged, and honestly: do it. Arriving the evening before Day 1 ensures a relaxed, stress-free start without scrambling to make the afternoon welcome meeting. Staying an extra day gives you Zion with no agenda — which turns out to be some of the finest hiking you will ever do. La Verkin is a genuinely magical little town worth the extra morning. You are responsible for any additional travel arrangements.
Come With Us
Your Spot Is Waiting
"The canyon has waited millions of years for you to walk through it. It can wait a little longer — but not forever. Your spot on this retreat is limited, and the women gathering for this adventure are exactly your people. Come as you are. Leave as more."
PAYPAL:
Join us for a family hike with kids in the Glacier area! Free to join, but you must register. Exact date, time, and meeting spot (second half of August) will be emailed to participants for safety and privacy—email me to get the date.
Trail is about 12 miles; we will go as far as the kids can and then turn back. Our goal is to reach at least halfway. Expect about 6 hours. Not suitable for children under 8–10 years or kids who can’t hike for long periods.
Kids set the pace — we stop and snack when they need to, and will take frequent bathroom breaks. Bear spray is REQUIRED for everyone 12 and older, no exceptions. Water minimums: adults 3 L each; children under 12, 2 L each. Wear proper hiking shoes and bring hiking poles.
We’ll meet at a pickup location and take a shuttle to the trailhead, then return by shuttle to our cars. Adults will be placed at the front, middle, and back of the group. This hike requires close supervision of children and involves risks like wildlife (including grizzly bears) and narrow, tricky sections where careful footing is needed.
